What Happens to Your Body When You Hit High Altitude in the Rockies (And How to Handle It)

You've trained for months. You've got the right boots, the perfect layering system, and a playlist ready to go. Then you step off the plane in Denver, grab your rental car, and drive up into the mountains — and somewhere around 9,000 feet, your body starts sending some very confusing signals. Your heart races during a gentle walk. Your head feels like it's wrapped in a wool blanket. You're exhausted even though you slept eight hours.

Welcome to altitude. It's one of the Rockies' most humbling realities, and it catches even seasoned outdoor adventurers off guard.

Why the Air Up There Is Different

Here's the thing: the percentage of oxygen in the atmosphere doesn't actually change as you climb higher. It stays at about 21% whether you're in Miami or at the summit of a 14er in Colorado. What changes is the barometric pressure — the weight of the air pushing down on you. At higher elevations, that pressure drops, which means each breath you take delivers fewer oxygen molecules to your lungs.

At sea level, your blood oxygen saturation typically sits around 98–99%. Climb to 8,000 feet, and that number can dip into the low 90s. Push above 12,000 feet, and some people see readings in the mid-80s — a level that would set off alarms in a hospital.

Your body isn't used to this, and it responds accordingly.

"What we see physiologically is a cascade of compensatory responses," explains Dr. Sarah Kellerman, an exercise physiologist who has worked with athletes training in Colorado's high country. "Your breathing rate increases, your heart pumps faster, and over time your body starts producing more red blood cells to carry whatever oxygen is available. But that adaptation takes days — sometimes weeks. Your cardiovascular system doesn't just flip a switch."

The Symptoms You Shouldn't Ignore

Acute Mountain Sickness, or AMS, is the most common altitude-related condition visitors to the Rockies encounter. It typically kicks in within six to twelve hours of arriving at elevation, and it can range from mildly annoying to genuinely dangerous.

The hallmark symptom is a headache — usually a dull, persistent throb that doesn't respond well to ibuprofen. But AMS often brings a whole package of misery along with it:

Most visitors experience mild versions of these symptoms and feel better within a day or two as their bodies adjust. But two more serious conditions — High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) and High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) — are genuine medical emergencies. HAPE involves fluid building up in the lungs; HACE involves swelling in the brain. Both can develop rapidly and both require immediate descent and medical attention.

Know the red flags: extreme breathlessness at rest, a persistent dry cough, confusion or disorientation, loss of coordination, or severe headache that won't respond to any treatment. If you or anyone in your group shows these signs, descend immediately and get medical help.

Before You Even Leave Home: Smart Pre-Trip Prep

The best time to start preparing for altitude is before your trip, not after you've already got a splitting headache at your trailhead.

Arrive early. If your schedule allows, spend a night or two in Denver (elevation 5,280 feet) before heading into the higher mountains. It's not full acclimatization, but it gives your body a gentle introduction to lower oxygen levels.

Hydrate aggressively. Dehydration and altitude sickness are a nasty combination, and dry mountain air accelerates fluid loss through breathing. Start upping your water intake a few days before you arrive, and keep a water bottle in your hand throughout your trip.

Dial back the alcohol. At least for the first couple of days. Alcohol suppresses your breathing rate during sleep — exactly the wrong thing when your body is already struggling to get enough oxygen.

Talk to your doctor about Diamox. Acetazolamide (brand name Diamox) is a prescription medication that can help prevent and treat AMS by stimulating faster breathing. It's not for everyone, but if you have a history of altitude sickness or you're planning a rapid ascent, it's worth a conversation with your physician before you go.

Get in cardiovascular shape. Being fit won't prevent altitude sickness — plenty of elite athletes get it — but good aerobic conditioning means your heart and lungs are working more efficiently, which helps.

On the Mountain: Strategies That Actually Work

Once you're up in the Rockies, a few practical habits can make a real difference.

Climb high, sleep low. This is the golden rule of mountain acclimatization. During the day, you can push to higher elevations; at night, come back down to sleep at a lower altitude. Your body does its best adaptation work while you're resting, and sleeping lower gives it better conditions to do that.

Go slow. Seriously. Whatever pace you think is appropriate, cut it by a third. Rushing at altitude is one of the fastest ways to trigger AMS. Take breaks, breathe deeply, and let your body set the pace.

Eat carbohydrates. Research suggests that a high-carb diet is easier for your body to metabolize at altitude than fat or protein. Trail mix, energy bars, and simple snacks are your friends up here.

Listen to your body without ego. This is the hardest one. Nobody wants to be the person who turns back, especially when you've traveled far and spent good money on the trip. But pushing through genuine altitude sickness symptoms is dangerous and often counterproductive — you'll feel worse, not better, and you risk a serious medical situation.

"The mountain will be there next time," says Jake Moreno, a guide based out of Breckenridge who leads groups on Colorado's high peaks year-round. "I've turned groups around dozens of times over the years, and every single one of those clients came back the following season and had an incredible experience. The ones who push through when their body is saying stop — those are the stories that don't end as well."

The Upside of Acclimatization

Here's the encouraging part: your body is remarkably good at adapting. After three to five days at elevation, most people feel dramatically better. Your kidneys adjust your blood chemistry, your breathing patterns shift, and your body ramps up red blood cell production. By the end of a week, many visitors feel genuinely strong on the trails.

The Rockies reward patience. Give your body the time it needs, respect what altitude does to human physiology, and you'll find that the thin air becomes just another part of the landscape — one that makes every summit feel that much more earned.
